David Burke (Jason Sudeikis) è uno piccolo spacciatore di marijuana. Tra la sua clientela annovera cuochi e mamme borghesi ma niente ragazzini, dopotutto, si considera un uomo con scrupoli. Cosa potrebbe andare storto, quindi? Beh, diverse cose. Malgrado tenti di passare sempre inosservato, impara nel peggiore dei modi che nessuna buona azione rimane impunita quando per aiutare dei teenager locali si trova ad essere aggredito da un gruppo di punkabbestie che gli ruba la 'roba' e il contante, lasciandolo in debito pesante con il suo fornitore, Brad (Ed Helms). Per poter rimettere ogni cosa a posto, e soprattutto salvare la pelle, David deve passare allo spaccio di droghe pesanti e si trova, così, a collaborare all'ultima operazione di Brad: un carico in arrivo dal Messico. Coinvolgendo loro malgrado i propri vicini: la cinica spogliarellista Rose (Jennifer Aniston), il suo smanioso 'cliente' Kenny (Will Poulter) e la tatuata e astuta teenager Casey (Emma Roberts), David organizza un piano perfetto: una moglie e due figli finti. A bordo di una lucida roulotte, i "Miller" si dirigono verso il confine meridionale degli USA.
