The Last Duel, film diretto da Ridley Scott, è ambientato nel XIV secolo, durante la Guerra dei cent'anni, e racconta una storia vera, quella dell'ultimo "duello di Dio" combattuto in Francia sotto il regno di Carlo VI. Dopo essere tornato dalla guerra, il cavaliere Jean de Carrouges (Matt Damon), grande combattente sul campo di battaglia, scopre che sua moglie Marguerite (Jodie Comer) è stata violentata dallo scudiero e suo amico Jacques Le Gris (Adam Driver), noto per la sua sagacia e la sua arte oratoria.
Marguerite decide coraggiosamente di portare a processo Jacques e denunciare quanto accaduto, ma non viene creduta. Essendo al tempo la testimonianza della donna troppo debole, perché priva di ogni posizione giuridica senza la presenza del marito, la vittima dello stupro viene accusata di dire falsità.
È così che Jean per difendere l'onore di sua moglie decide di ricorrere al codice cavalleresco e sfidare a duello Jacques, seguendo il principio del "Deus Vult", ovvero il sopravvissuto per volontà divina avrebbe vinto la contesa. Solo uno tra i due potrà quindi sopravvivere a quello che è stato l'ultimo duello giudiziario nella storia francese e uno dei più estenuanti...
