In un villaggio delle Alpi bavaresi, un giovane scienziato di nome Henry Frankenstein e il suo assistente gobbo Fritz compongono un corpo umano rubando parti del corpo da cadaveri appena sepolti in un cimitero o da criminali condannati a morte per impiccagione. In un laboratorio che ha costruito all'interno di una torre abbandonata, Frankenstein desidera dare vita a un essere umano rianimando il corpo mediante dispositivi elettrici perfezionati; gli manca solo un cervello per la sua creazione. In una scuola vicina l'ex insegnante di Henry, il dottor Waldman, mostra alla sua classe il cervello di un essere umano medio paragonato a quello corrotto di un criminale. Fritz è inviato da Frankenstein a rubare dalla classe il cervello sano, ma l'uomo lo fa cadere accidentalmente a terra e quindi porta al suo padrone il cervello guasto.
