The Water Man, film originale Netflix diretto da David Oyelowo, vede protagonista l’undicenne Gunner Boone (Lonnie Chavis): un ragazzo che recentemente si è trasferito insieme alla sua famiglia nella piccola realtà rurale di Pine Mills, nell’Oregon. Mentre il suo legame con il padre Amos (David Oyelowo), un marine che a causa del lavoro è raramente a casa, appare precario; tutto il contrario è quello di Gunner con sua madre Mary (Rosario Dawson), purtroppo affetta da uno stato avanzato di leucemia. E’ per questo che Gunner passa spesso gran parte delle sue giornate nella libreria della città per documentarsi sul cancro, oltre ad andare in bicicletta e lavorare al suo fumetto. Un giorno per caso, il ragazzo viene a conoscenza di una leggenda locale, il Water Man: un uomo che si dice abiti nei boschi e che sia riuscito ad ingannare la morte nella speranza di ricongiungersi un giorno con la defunta moglie. Dopo aver incontrato la coetanea Jo (Amiah Miller), che afferma di sapere dove si trova il Water Man, Gunner e la sua nuova amica decidono di avventurarsi nel bosco, dove si ritroveranno ad affrontare numerose prove e pericolosi ostacoli. Il tutto nella speranza di trovare la figura mitologica che potrebbe salvare la madre di Gunner dal suo infausto destino...
