Una folle passione, film diretto da Susanne Bier, racconta una storia d'amore che sfocia nella follia e nell'ossessione, ambientata verso la fine negli anni Venti, durante la Grande Depressione, tra i monti del North Carolina. George (Bradley Cooper) e Serena (Jennifer Lawrence) Pemberton sono due giovani sposati da poco, molto innamorati l'uno dell'altra. I due gestiscono insieme l'industria di legname di George; infatti, mentre lui ne è il socio fondatore, lei supervisiona i taglialegna, caccia i serpenti a sonagli dalla zona e, grazie al suo occhio attento, riesce a salvare anche uno degli operai in pericolo. Ben presto la loro ditta diventa un vero e proprio impero, ma i Pemberton non permettono né al successo né a nessun'altro di frapporsi tra loro.
George, però, nasconde qualcosa, un passato di cui Serena non è a conoscenza. Quando la donna scopre per caso il segreto del marito, qualcosa di oscuro si risveglia in lei e per timore che il suo amato George possa lasciarla, arriva a commettere l'inimmaginabile. Il solido legame che aveva tenuto uniti i Pemberton inizia a sgretolarsi pezzo dopo pezzo, trascinando la coppia verso un drammatico e tristo epilogo.
