The Master, film scritto e diretto da Paul Thomas Anderson, racconta la storia di Freddie Quell (Joaquin Phoenix), un giovane soldato di ritorno dal fronte della Seconda Guerra Mondiale, con evidenti problemi al sistema nervoso, la schiena incurvata e una forte difficoltà a relazionarsi con il prossimo. Sebbene lo Stato gli offra la possibilità di curarsi, l'uomo ha delle manie in ambito sessuale di cui sembra impossibile liberarsi. A Freddie non resta altro che affogare i suoi problemi nell'alcol.
Un giorno, dopo l'ennesimo bicchierino, l'ex militare si trova imbarcato su una nave. A bordo conosce il padre spirituale Lancaster Dodd (Philip Seymour Hoffman), fondatore del movimento La Causa, che decide di provare a curare Freddie. Contro ogni previsione, il giovane si sente subito molto meglio e decide di diventare uno degli adepti del gruppo. Con loro passa moltissimo tempo, fino a diventare uno dei membri più importanti. Improvvisamente, sceglie di lasciare il suo maestro e allontanarsi dal movimento…
