Il miglio verde è un film del 1999 diretto da Frank Darabont, tratto dall’omonimo romanzo di Stephen King. Il protagonista della vicenda è Paul Edgecombe (Tom Hanks), la cui vita è completamente stravolta dall’incontro con il detenuto John Coffey (Michael Clarke Duncan). Nel 1935 Paul lavora presso il Miglio Verde, soprannome del braccio della morte di Cold Mountain. Accusato di aver ucciso due gemelline, John viene condannato alla pena capitale ed è incarcerato nel Miglio. Nonostante la sua stazza gigantesca, l’uomo è molto scosso e impaurito e questo spinge Paul a non credere che possa essere del tutto malvagio. Mentre il perfido e sadico collega Percy Wetmore (Doug Hutchison) tortura chiunque gli capiti a tiro, Coffey si mostra gentile con tutti e salva un piccolo topolino, in seguito adottato dal detenuto Del (Michael Jeter).
I continui soprusi di Percy spingono Paul a stringere un patto con l’odioso colllega: avrebbe avuto potere decisionale sulla prossima esecuzione, a patto che poi avesse fatto domanda di assunzione presso un centro psichiatrico. Intanto, il collega di Paul, Hal Moores (James Cromwell) scopre che a sua moglie è stato diagnosticato un tumore e in carcere arriva un nuovo criminale: ‘Wild Bill’ Wharton (Sam Rockwell). Quest’ultimo mette a soqquadro l’intero braccio della morte, poiché è totalmente fuori controllo. Paul, suo malgrado, si pentirà amaramente di aver fatto organizzare l’esecuzione di Del a Percy, e scoprirà delle doti straordinarie di Coffey che lo aiuteranno nella sua vita privata. Così, l’uomo comprenderà che John è molto di più che un semplice criminale e, fidandosi di lui, opterà per una mossa azzardata per aiutare Moores. John, entrato in sintonia con Paul, gli mostrerà la verità sul suo crimine, ma il carceriere non potrà nulla contro la ferma decisione di Coffey…
