La Battaglia di Hacksaw Ridge è un film drammatico del 2016 diretto da Mel Gibson, ispirato alla vera storia di Desmond Doss, primo obiettore di coscienza dell'esercito americano ad ottenere una Medaglia D'Onore durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale.Siamo nel 1942. Il giovane Desmond Doss (Andrew Garfield), cresciuto in una famiglia di fede avventista della Virginia, dopo l'attacco delle truppe giapponesi a Pearl Harbor decide di arruolarsi nell'esercito come soccorritore militare. Doss, una volta arrivato al campo militare di Fort Jackson, viene posto sotto il comando del sergente Howell (Vince Vaughn). Durante l'addestramento fin da subito eccelle nelle prove fisiche ma viene man mano escluso dai suoi compagni quando rifiuta di imbracciare le armi pur di restare fedele ai suoi principi, anche in tempo di guerra.Oltre ad essere sottoposto alle vessazioni del suo sergente e del capitano Glover (Sam Worthington), che sperano di farlo desistere dalle sue convinzioni religiose e morali, viene picchiato brutalmente dai suoi commilitoni, che però lui si rifiuta di denunciare.Doss e il suo plotone partono in guerra e vengono condotti alla Battaglia di Okinawa per aiutare la divisione incaricata di sorvegliare la scarpata di Maeda, detta "Hacksaw Ridge".Durante un cruento attacco nipponico, gli americani sono spinti sul bordo della scarpata e molti soldati vengono uccisi e altrettanti rimangono feriti sul campo di battaglia. Ed è allora, che senza mai prendere in mano un'arma, Doss dimostrerà a tutti di essere un grandissimo eroe...
