The Descent - Discesa nelle tenebre, film scritto e diretto da Neil Marshall, vede protagoniste sei amiche che hanno in comune la passione per lo sport estremo.
Juno (Natalie Mendoza) è la capogruppo, una donna molto determinata e aggressiva. Poi c’è Holly (Nora-Jane Noone), paracadutista, e Beth (Alex Reid), un’insegnante che deve tenere sotto controllo Sarah (Shauna Macdonald), che soffre di un forte esaurimento nervoso a causa della morte di suo marito e del figlio. Infine Rebecca (Saskia Mulder) e Sam (MyAnna Buring), due sorelle scandinave. Come ogni anno, decidono di incontrarsi per una nuova avventura: andare a esplorare le grotte nei pressi dei Monti Catskill, a New York. Quello che le aspetta, però, cambierà completamente le loro vite.
Le ragazze si calano in un'apertura e, se all’inizio la discesa è sorprendentemente meravigliosa, poi comincia a diventare sempre più complicata. La prima ad avere problemi è proprio Sarah, che resta incastrata in una strettoia e si fa prendere da un attacco d'ansia. Così Beth torna indietro per aiutare l'amica. Tutto si complica quando il cunicolo comincia improvvisamente a franare…
