Durante un primo appuntamento da dimenticare in Ohio, un uomo e una donna di colore sono protagonisti di una piccola infrazione. Non sarebbe nulla di grave ma la situazione degenera tragicamente e l'uomo finisce con l'uccidere un poliziotto per legittima difesa. Terrorizzati e preoccupati per le loro vite, i due si danno alla fuga ma ciò che è successo diviene di dominio pubblico per via di un video che ha ripreso tutto. La coppia involontariamente si trasforma in un simbolo di trauma, terrore, pena e dolore per tutta la nazione. Mentre si scoprono improbabili fuggiaschi, i due capiranno quanto profondo e potente possa rivelarsi l'amore.
