Andrew Neiman (Miles Teller) è uno studente di jazz al primo anno del prestigioso Conservatorio Shaffer, a New York. Ha studiato percussioni fin dall’infanzia e aspira a diventare un batterista di fama internazionale. Andrew viene invitato dallo scorbutico direttore Terence Fletcher (J. K. Simmons) nella sua band come secondo batterista. Fletcher è eccessivamente aggressivo e violento con i suoi studenti, rivolgendo loro pesanti insulti.
Tempo dopo, la band del direttore si presenta a un concorso, ma il primo batterista, nella pausa tra primo e secondo tempo, non trova gli spartiti, e non riuscendo a farne a meno, cede il posto ad Andrew, il quale conosce il pezzo a memoria. Dopo la brillante performance, Andrew viene promosso a primo batterista. Il ragazzo si esercita fino a farsi sanguinare le mani e lotta strenuamente con lo scontroso direttore per mantenere il posto. Pronto a dedicarsi in tutto e per tutto alla sua realizzazione professionale, decide persino di lasciare la sua ragazza (Melissa Benoist).
Quando la band di Fletcher partecipa a un nuovo concorso, Andrew si presenta trafelato e sconvolto a causa degli imprevisti che ha dovuto affrontare per giungervi. Incapace di eseguire una performance soddisfacente, scoppia l’ennesima discussione con il direttore: a causa della mancanza di empatia di Fletcher, Andrew lo attacca di fronte al pubblico, venendo così espulso dal Conservatorio. Il padre di Andrew (Paul Reiser) lo convince a intentare una causa contro il professore, il quale viene di conseguenza licenziato. Sembra che il rapporto tra i due sia definitivamente terminato, ma non è così; infatti, avranno modo di incontrarsi e nuovamente confrontarsi, scontrarsi e spingersi oltre i propri limiti.
