La serie fu ideata da due compagni di college, Richard Levinson e William Link, appassionati dei romanzi di Ellery Queen e già ideatori della omonima serie per la gli studi televisivi Universal della California, negli USA.
I due ammisero di essersi ispirati al buffo ed umile poliziotto Petrovitch, nel romanzo "Delitto e castigo", di Dotstoïevski[1]. Levinson-Link inoltre, negli anni sessanta idearono lo schema del classico "giallo" ribaltando i presupposti del whodunit, o giallo deduttivo di matrice inglese. Infatti, sin dalle prime sequenze lo spettatore conosce l'assassino perché lo vede compiere il delitto. Il meccanismo sta nel capire come il detective riuscirà a smascherarlo, smontando pezzo per pezzo l'alibi fatto di complicate strutture intellettuali.
La struttura di tutti gli episodi infatti, è pressoché standardizzata: dopo un preambolo iniziale in cui si conosce la vittima, viene mostrato l'omicidio di cui lo spettatore ha modo di vedere l'autore, così che possa poi meglio apprezzare l'indagine portata avanti dallo stesso investigatore.
Columbo is an American crime drama television series starring Peter Falk as Columbo, a homicide detective with the Los Angeles Police Department.[2][3] After two pilot episodes, the show originally aired on NBC from 1971 to 1978 as one of the rotating programs of The NBC Mystery Movie. Columbo then aired less frequently on ABC from 1989 to 2003.
The character and show, created by Richard Levinson and William Link, popularized the inverted detective story format, which begins by showing the commission of the crime and its perpetrator; the plot therefore usually has no "whodunit" element, and instead revolves around how a perpetrator known to the audience will finally be caught and exposed (sometimes referred to as a "howcatchem" .
