Ben Quick, un giovane che non trova lavoro per la sua triste, sebbene immeritata, fama d'incendiario, dopo aver lungamente peregrinato, capita in un grosso centro rurale del Mississipi, dove viene accolto nell'azienda agricola di Willy Varner, grande proprietario, energico e dispotico, abituato a dominare tirannicamente i suoi dipendenti e la sua famiglia. Il suo modo di fare gli ha tolto l'affetto dei figli che ha sempre costretto ad obbedire in tutto ai suoi voleri. Il figlio Jody ha sposato Julia, giovane donna piena di vitalità e perciò gradita al suocero, il quale però rimprovera ai due la mancanza di figlioli, mentre rinfaccia al figlio lo scarso contributo recato alla prosperità dell'azienda familiare. La figlia Clara non è ancora sposata: le sue simpatie vanno ad un giovane nobiluomo del paese, Allan, dominato dalla madre, perennemente indeciso, che l'energico William non può certo vedere di buon occhio. Ben Quick ottiene da Jody un terreno da coltivare; il vecchio William, tornando a casa dopo un lungo periodo di cura, è dapprima preoccupato per la presenza di Quick, del quale gli è nota la triste fama. Ma il fare risoluto di Ben Quick piace al vecchio, il quale gli affida il disbrigo di certi affari non molto puliti; gli dà carta bianca per riassestare un emporio troppo trascurato dal figlio e non nasconde il proposito di dargli sua figlia in sposa. Ma il favore concesso al forestiero dal padre, che glielo propone ad esempio, ed il contegno stesso di Ben, che con la sua astuzia si fa beffe di lui, esasperano Jody, che un giorno, in un accesso di pazzo furore, chiude il padre nella stalla e vi appicca il fuoco. Ma appena compiuto il gesto, si pente e libera il padre, il quale comprende il suo dramma e generosamente lo perdona. Ben, che la folla crede responsabile dell'incendio, corre il pericolo d'essere linciato. Lo salva Clara, che ha capito di amarlo: i due si sposeranno con grande soddisfazione del vecchio Will.
