Lo spaccone (The Hustler) è un film del 1961 diretto da Robert Rossen, tratto dal romanzo omonimo di Walter Tevis e interpretato da Paul Newman, George C. Scott, Jackie Gleason e Piper Laurie.
Annoverato tra i film più belli della storia del cinema americano, narra della storia di Eddie Felson, soprannominato "Eddy Lo svelto" per la sua abilità nel concludere al biliardo. Felson, conscio della sua bravura, non smette di osare e punta sempre più in alto, comportandosi come uno "spaccone". Il film ha ricevuto numerosi premi, tra cui due Oscar, e nel 1997 è stato scelto per la conservazione nel National Film Registry della Biblioteca del Congresso degli Stati Uniti.

Eddie Felson è un giovane dal carattere violento e orgoglioso. Dall'età di sedici anni ha scelto la sua carriera: quella del "campione" di biliardo. Un giorno Eddie decide di sfidare l'imbattibile "Minnesota Fats", campione di Chicago. Si mette d'accordo con il suo amico e manager Charlie e fa il giro di tutte le sale del centro ovest per raccogliere, giocando varie partite, una forte somma di denaro . Raccolti seimila dollari Eddie parte per Chicago e si reca alla grande sala Bennington. Individuato "Minnesota", lo sfida pubblicamente. Al principio Eddie vince, ma in seguito perde il controllo dei propri nervi e l'avversario finisce col vincere. In un bar, una mattina, Eddie fa amicizia con Sarah e i due finiscono col vivere insieme. Continuando a frequentare le sale da gioco, Eddie fa la conoscenza di uno sfruttatore di giocatori di biliardo, Bert Gordon, che gli offre aiuto in cambio di una percentuale sulle vincite. Eddie rifiuta quel genere di lavoro, ma in seguito accetta. Preso nuovamente dal demone del gioco, Eddie si allontana lentamente da Sarah. La ragazza, che aveva trovato nell'amore per il giovane una ragione di vita, sente il peso della solitudine e, disgustata dall'immoralità del mondo che la circonda, accetta le avances di Bert, in un ultimo atto di degradazione, e poi si uccide. Eddie, di partita in partita, arriva nuovamente a sfidare "Minnesota", battendolo finalmente e sfilandogli ben tredicimilacinquecento dollari. Bert reclama il suo compenso e Eddie, dopo averlo pagato, giura di liberarsi da quella schiavitù. La notizia della morte di Sarah lo addolora profondamente e gli fa comprendere di aver perso l'unica cosa vera della sua vita.
