Melania Daniels (Tippi Hedren), ricca e giovane figlia di uno dei più importanti editori della città, incontra in un negozio di animali di San Francisco l’avvocato Mitch Brenner (Rod Taylor). Nonostante Mitch l’abbia riconosciuta, finge di scambiarla per una commessa del negozio: sta infatti cercando una coppia di pappagalli inseparabili da regalare alla sorella Cathy in occasione del suo undicesimo compleanno. Melania, infastidita ma al tempo stesso intrigata da Mitch, sta al gioco e gli risponde che il negozio non ha tali esemplari, e gli propone invece dei canarini. I due battibeccano, ma quando Mitch se ne va, Melania si annota la targa della sua auto e decide di acquistare la coppia di pappagalli che lui desiderava.
Quindi, si reca personalmente all’appartamento di Mitch a San Francisco, ma, non trovandolo, decide di proseguire per Bodega Bay, il luogo dove Mitch trascorre il weekend in compagnia della madre e della sorellina. Giunta con la sua auto, Melania vuole fare un’ulteriore sorpresa all'uomo: noleggia così una barca, in modo da giungere alla casa di Mitch direttamente dalla baia. Entrata in casa, vi lascia la gabbia con all'interno i pappagalli, per poi tornare a nascondersi sul motoscafo. Accortosi degli uccellini, Mitch nota la barca di Melania, così sale in macchina per raggiungerla dall'altra parte della baia. Quando sta per toccare terra, Melania viene attaccata da un gabbiano, che le provoca una ferita; Mitch la medica e la invita restare a cena, e nonostante l’iniziale riluttanza, lei accetta. Quello che sembra un banale incidente non è altro che il principio di una serie di strani accadimenti di cui gli uccelli sono inquietanti protagonisti...
