Il silenzio degli innocenti (The Silence of the Lambs) è un film del 1991 diretto da Jonathan Demme, interpretato da Jodie Foster e Anthony Hopkins. Basato sul romanzo omonimo di Thomas Harris, è il secondo film tratto dai romanzi incentrati sulla figura del serial killer Hannibal Lecter.
È il terzo film, dopo Accadde una notte e Qualcuno volò sul nido del cuculo, ad aver vinto i cinque premi Oscar più importanti: miglior film, miglior regia (Jonathan Demme), miglior attore (Anthony Hopkins), miglior attrice (Jodie Foster) e sceneggiatura (Ted Tally).
Nel 1998 l'American Film Institute l'ha inserito al sessantacinquesimo posto della classifica dei migliori cento film statunitensi di tutti i tempi, mentre dieci anni dopo, nella lista aggiornata, è sceso al settantaquattresimo posto.

In seguito ad alcuni efferati omicidi ai danni di giovani donne, che vengono assassinate e scuoiate da un misterioso serial killer in territorio americano, l'agente dell'FBI Jack Crawford (Scott Glenn) pensa di dare una svolta alle indagini coinvolgendo il dottor Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins), criminologo ed ex-psichiatra, detenuto nel manicomio criminale di Baltimora per aver ucciso e mangiato alcuni dei suoi pazienti. Il federale pensa infatti che per giungere alla cattura di Buffalo Bill (Ted Levine), il punto di vista del dottore possa essere determinante; per convincerlo a collaborare, affida il caso alla giovane Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster), la quale capirà ben presto che l'unico modo per far parlare il cannibale è aprirsi lei stessa. Accetta così di farsi psicanalizzare dal Dottor Lecter, raccontandogli della sua infanzia e dei suoi turbamenti e instaurando con il criminale un rapporto sincero.
Grazie alla collaborazione con Hannibal, Clarice riesce a mettersi sulle tracce dell'assassino, cercando disperatamente di salvare l'ultima ragazza rapita, la figlia di una senatrice. Lecter chiede in cambio dell'aiuto fornito un regime di maggiore libertà, che gli permetterà di tentare l'evasione.
