Un'ereditiera di Boston, oppressa da una madre troppo autoritaria, ha una forte crisi depressiva. Dopo il ricovero in una casa di cura, viene convinta dal suo dottore a partire per una crociera in Sud America, durante la quale si innamora di un uomo infelicemente sposato, costretto a restare accanto alla moglie malata. L'affetto e l'amore che le sono sempre mancati aiutano la donna a vincere le sue paure e, nonostante la promesa di non rivedersi mai più, i due trovano un nuovo motivo per restare uniti quando la donna decide di prendersi cura della figlia di lui, riconoscendo nella fragile e introversa ragazzina sé stessa da giovane.

La qualità video è ottima ma la versione audio italiana purtroppo è quella ridoppiata negli anni '80, compresa la colonna sonora che non è quella di Max Steiner che vinse l'Oscar nel '42.
Un motivo in più per godersi la versione originale del film. I sottotitoli presenti nella release sono la trasposizione un po' più sintetica del doppiaggio italiano.
