Questo thriller vede come protagoniste due ragazzine di poco più di 8 anni. Ronnie Fuller e Alice Manning. Alice è figlia unica di una madre single che l'ha cresciuta amorevolmente e dedicandole ogni attenzione. Ronnie è figlia di una famiglia disagiata. Le due ragazzine non sono amiche ma all'inizio del film la madre di Alice, Helen, incoraggia la figlia ad andare a una festa di compleanno in compagnia di Ronnie, poiché è sempre sola e senza amici. Le due ragazzine sono fisicalmente diametralmente opposte (dettaglio importante all'interno del film): Ronnie è piccola e magra. Alice è robusta e alta. Alice è invidiosa della fisicità di Ronnie e durante il film menzionerà spesso questa qualità: Alice è convinta fermamente che la madre non la ami a sufficienza perché non è la figlia che avrebbe sempre voluto mentre, sostiene che Ronnie incarni meglio l'ideale di figlia perfetta per la madre.
Alla festa di compleanno le ragazzine non si rivelano molto popolari. Alice regala alla ragazzina festeggiata un libro mentre tutte le altre ragazzine hanno fatto regali più costosi e adeguati. Ronnie ha portato come regalo una bambola, e non vuole consegnarlo. Ronnie cerca di nascondere il suo pacchetto regalo ma, Alice per umiliare l'amica, mostra il suo regalo. Il regalo viene spacchettato e Ronnie viene umiliata davanti a tutti. Ronnie,umiliata insulta la ragazzina festeggiata, e mentre la madre della ragazzina la insegue per rimproverarla, Ronnie la colpisce al viso. Una volta colpita al viso la madre della festeggiata incoraggia tutte e due le ragazzine ad andarsene dalla festa. Mentre le ragazzine sono sulla via di casa, silenziose, notano una bambina lasciata fuori dalla porta di casa, una piccola bambina di colore di qualche mese di vita. Ronnie bussa alla porta di casa e nessuno risponde così decide di prendere la bambina. Durante il film si vede la vita delle due ragazzine accusate di omicidio e rapimento, ormai cresciute. Alice è diventata una ragazza grossa e passa i suoi giorni in giro a piedi fissando le persone. Ronnie lavora in un supermercato.
The movie is told in non-chronological order, with present scenes intercut with flashbacks that slowly reveal the details of the past as the movie progresses.
18-year-old Ronnie Fuller and Alice Manning have just been released from Juvenile Hall after serving 7 years for the kidnapping and murder of the bi-racial granddaughter of the county's first black judge. When asked about the crime, Alice continually insists that she is innocent, a victim of Ronnie's machinations, including Ronnie planting her jack in the box at the scene of the murder to frame her. In flashback we see the girls walking home from a pool party, when Ronnie sees the baby unattended in a stroller on a porch. Despite Alice's pleas not to, Ronnie takes the baby and runs off with her, insisting to Alice that they can take better care of the baby and that it is theirs now.
In the present Ronnie is working at a bagel shop in town, while Alice spends most of her days apparently aimlessly walking around town eating junk food, but lying and telling her mother she is searching for employment as per her request. Alice also secretly dreams of finding validation through reality TV stardom, and is shown several times practicing a speech about being a "victim" of the justice system. Alice's mother Helen Manning is a teacher at the elementary school, and it is apparent she and her daughter have a contentious relationship. Helen is ashamed of Alice being overweight, her unsophisticated tastes, and her lack of interest in the kind of things Helen likes. It is also shown in flashback that before the kidnapping Alice and Ronnie were forced to hang out and go to the pool party together by Helen, who showed favoritism toward Ronnie in front of Alice, connecting with Ronnie over art and with her more free-spirited attitude.
