Trama
A Somavsky e Mulhall, sergenti della Marina americana, viene dato l'incarico di scortare il diciottenne marinaio Larry Meadows, condannato ad otto anni per tentato furto di 40 dollari nella casa dell'ammiraglio. Una facile "corvè", pensano i due lavativi anziani. Tuttavia, mentre viaggiano, a poco a poco i due si lasciano conquistare dalla disarmata innocenza del ragazzo, il quale appare loro, più che un criminale, un disadattato, un cleptomane, un ragazzo immeritevole della severa condanna.
Uno dei migliori film di Ashby e una delle migliori interpretazioni di Nicholson, ammirevole per misura e premiato a Cannes.
Il merito è soprattutto della sceneggiatura di Robert Towne, giustamente segnalata ai premi Oscar.
