Gli inizi, però, sono piuttosto scoraggianti. Finalmente la grande occasione: il dottor Bui, che "possiede" qualcosa come duemilatrecento mutuati, è in fin di vita. Scavalcando i colleghi, ansiosi come lui, di gettarsi su quel ben di Dio, il neo-dottore riesce, corteggiando la moglie del morente e, con la vaga promessa di sposarla, a diventare, per così dire l'unico "erede" del "patrimonio".
