Nel 1988 esce il loro terzo album, Stay on these roads, con il quale la band, tramite un lieve cambiamento di immagine, tenta di proporre un Pop più maturo e ricercato.
Però nonostante riescano nel loro intento, questo disco raccoglie un successo minore rispetto ai due lavori precedenti.
Si tratta comunque di un album che ancora contiene delle hits, come la title-track, Stay on these roads, che rimane una gradevole ballata, o Touchy! e You are the one, che sono delle classiche Pop-song del periodo.
Ma non mancano nemmeno brani originali come The blood that moves the body, dalle sonorità accattivanti con un'atmosfera vagamente lunatica e misteriosa; stesso stile anche per The living daylights, che unisce all'atmosfera carismatica una linea melodica particolarmente orecchiabile, non a caso questa è la hit più famosa dell'intero album.
Restano poi pressoché sconosciute all'interno di questo disco altre canzoni ben scritte e confezionate, che rappresentano il Pop più raffinato e maturo di fine anni 80, come Out of blue comes green, There's never a forever thing e This alone is love.
