Dominic "Dom" Cobb è un professionista che si occupa di "estrarre" segreti dalle menti delle persone mentre queste dormono, infiltrandosi nei loro sogni tramite un apparecchio a timer in suo possesso, che permette a un gruppo di persone di partecipare a un "sogno condiviso". Cobb e la sua squadra normalmente si servono di trucchi e inganni per carpire le informazioni della vittima, la quale crede di essere nella realtà e non sospetta nulla. Insieme al suo socio Arthur, cerca di entrare nella mente di Mr. Saito, un potente uomo d'affari giapponese, per eseguire un'estrazione ma fallisce quando la proiezione onirica di Mal, sua defunta moglie, appare nel sogno interferendo con l'operazione.
Saito svela che il lavoro era solo una prova dell'abilità di Cobb. Il giapponese gli propone quindi un accordo: grazie alle sue conoscenze gli permetterà di tornare negli Stati Uniti, da dove è dovuto fuggire perché accusato dell'omicidio della moglie, e rivedere i suoi due figli; in cambio, il team di estrattori dovrà eseguire un processo chiamato "innesto": inserire nella mente di Robert Fischer, giovane erede del rivale d'affari di Saito, l'idea di dividere il suo impero economico alla morte del padre. Cobb recluta dunque Eames, un falsario in grado di cambiare aspetto all'interno dei sogni con cui già aveva collaborato in passato; Arianna, una brillante studentessa di architettura che avrà il compito di istruire i sognatori su come immaginare il mondo in cui si troveranno...
