Rapinare le agenzie della Texas Midlands, solo pezzi piccoli, solo dalle casse, la mattina presto quando non ci sono clienti. Pulire i soldi al Casinò. Pagare i debiti, estinguere l'ipoteca e lasciare il ranch dove ha appena scoperto il petrolio ai suoi due figli, per interrompere una storia di povertà famigliare durata anche troppo. È questo il piano di Toby, per il quale ha bisogno di suo fratello Tanner, da poco in libertà, dopo dieci anni di carcere. Le banche gli hanno preso quel poco che aveva e ora lui deve riprenderselo, possibilmente senza spargere sangue. Due le incognite: Tanner, che è una testa calda, e un Texas ranger a un passo dal pensionamento, che come detective sa il fatto suo meglio di tutti gli altri.
Il film è stato presentato nella sezione Un Certain Regard al Festival di Cannes 2016. È stato distribuito nelle sale cinematografiche statunitensi il 12 agosto 2016, mentre in Italia è disponibile su Netflix dal 18 novembre 2016.
La sceneggiatura, scritta da Taylor Sheridan, è stata inserita nella Black List (sondaggio annuale sulle sceneggiature di film più apprezzate ma ancora non prodotte) del 2012 con il titolo Comancheria.
