Nell'Antico Egitto il potente e malvagio mutante En Sabah Nur domina incontrastato e venerato come un dio per le sue capacità telecinetiche e regna circondato dai suoi luogotenenti, detti i Quattro Cavalieri, ossia i mutanti più potenti del tempo dopo di lui. Tuttavia, dopo parecchi anni, il re è ormai invecchiato e così usa un'avanzatissima tecnologia combinata ai suoi poteri per spostarsi nel corpo di un suo simile assorbendone i poteri. La macchina è collocata in una delle piramidi di Giza, l'allora centro del mondo. Non appena la sua coscienza si stacca dal vecchio corpo per recarsi nell'altro viene tradito da alcuni suoi sottoposti, che lo seppelliscono vivo facendo crollare l'edificio spingendo dei massi pesantissimi contro i suoi basamenti; i suoi luogotenenti muoiono, ma riescono a proteggerlo e a preservarlo con i loro poteri. La coscienza di En Sabah Nur rimane così addormentata nel nuovo corpo, poiché la macchina è stata seppellita e non può funzionare senza la luce del sole.
Nel 1983 l'agente della CIA Moira McTaggert, vecchia amica del Professor Charles Xavier che le ha cancellato i ricordi, si trova ad Il Cairo per indagare su alcune pratiche religiose effettuate da una misteriosa setta. La donna riesce ad entrare nella caverna in cui si svolge il rituale, caverna che scopre essere i resti della macchina di En Sabah Nur, sepolto poco distante. Tuttavia la luce del sole passata a causa di Moira, che aveva tolto il tappeto che chiudeva la grotta, la riattiva e il mutante si risveglia...
