Dennis Nash, sua madre e suo figlio vengono buttati fuori dalla casa in cui hanno sempre vissuto nel giro di pochi minuti, il tempo di raccogliere due cose, le foto ricordo, i giochi del bambino, una piantina in vaso. L'agente immobiliare Rick Carver non ha tempo da perdere e si fa accompagnare dalla polizia. Dopo Nash, tocca a molte altre case, famiglie da spedire in qualche motel, anziani da parcheggiare alla croce rossa: tutta gente che non ce la più a pagare il mutuo, tutte case che fruttano a Carver un sacco di soldi. Ma Nash non si vuole arrendere, è deciso a ridare al figlio la sua stanza, dovesse vendere l'anima al diavolo. Ed è così che comincia a lavorare per Carver stesso, dentro e fuori la legalità, infliggendo ad altri come lui le sofferenze che ha appena subito, perché "l'America è stata costruita per i vincenti" e non sarà lui il perdente di turno.
