Un maniaco sessuale terrorizza Londra violentando e strangolando donne con una cravatta. Per una serie di false prove e di sfortunate coincidenze, i primi sospetti cadono su Richard Blaney, un ex-aviatore della RAF ormai alcolizzato. Una vittima del serial killer è infatti Brenda Blaney, che gestiva un'agenzia matrimoniale ed era l'ex-moglie di Richard: questi aveva avuto un violento litigio con l'ex-moglie Brenda il giorno prima che la stessa fosse assassinata dallo strangolatore seriale ed era stato visto allontanarsi dall'agenzia poco prima la scoperta del cadavere. Richard, braccato, cerca di nascondersi con l'aiuto della sua attuale compagna Barbara, incontrata nel pub in cui lavorava saltuariamente.
