Il film inizia con la nascita di Gesù, nel quadro di una situazione particolarmente travagliata a causa della spietata dominazione romana sul territorio di Giudea. La vita di Cristo viene poi narrata secondo le tappe consuete dalla strage degli innocenti da parte di Erode, al lavoro di Gesù come falegname, dalle tentazioni, alla predicazione fino alla crocefissione e alla resurrezione. Un kolossal religioso, tra spettacolo hollywoodiano e ricostruzione storica fantasiosa. Ray accentua la lettura "politica" della vicenda soprattutto nelle figure di Barabba e di Giuda, visti come ribelli al potere della dominazione di Roma.
