Zack Mayo (Gere) è un giovanotto di origini italoamericane cresciuto con un padre marinaio, donnaiolo e ubriacone, nei porti di mezzo mondo. Per cambiare vita si iscrive al corso per piloti militari di jet. Qui, grazie anche alla cattiveria del suo istruttore (Gossett jr.) e alla rigidità della disciplina militare, avrà modo di dimostrare tutto il proprio carattere, anche se il suicidio di Sid, il suo migliore amico di corso, lo turberà. Per Zack arriverà l'amore, Paula (Winger), una ragazza povera, ma affettuosa. Educazione all'autorità (non inganno il finto ribellismo di Gere) e storia d'amore abbastanza spinta: il cocktail astutissimo funzionò lanciando attori e regista, ma anche il bravissimo caratterista Gosset jr. (che vinse l'Oscar). Oscar anche alla canzone "Up Where We Belong".
