Sull'Enterprise in ricognizione nel Cosmo, il capitano Picard viene informato che la Federazione ha intrapreso una battaglia contro i Borg in rotta verso la Terra. Violando gli ordini ricevuti, Picard sente la minaccia, ma subito dopo i Borg cercano di tornare indietro nel tempo, quando la Terra viveva un periodo delicatissimo, la seconda età del buio dopo la terza guerra mondiale. L'equipaggio dell'Enterprise arriva nel Montana nel 2063, alla vigilia della partenza dello storico volo che porterà al primo contatto tra gli umani e gli extra terrestri, e successivamente alla nascita della Federazione Unita dei Pianeti, ossia proprio di Star Trek. Dopo molte difficoltà e scontri forti con i Borg con la loro crudele regina, Picard riesce ad impedire l'azione dei nemici. L'Enterprise ritorna a navigare nello spazio infinito.
