Nel XXIV secolo circolano tra i pianeti poderose astronavi: la più celebre è la "Enterprise", gloriosa nave vanto della flotta, sulla quale viaggia l'ex capitano James T. Kirk, ora in pensione. La nave capta una richiesta di aiuto da parte di alcune navi mercantili in difficoltà, ma accade un imprevisto e Kirk scompare senza lasciare traccia, nel tentativo di salvare l'equipaggio. Settantotto anni dopo troviamo una nuova "Enterprise", la quarta nave che può fregiarsi del glorioso nome, guidata dal capitano Jean-Luc Picard. Picard ha con sé come vice William Riker, il tenente Data, un androide con un chip innestato nella calotta cranica, il tenente Geordi La Forge, che vede attraverso un visore speciale ed il tenente Worf, un "Klingon". A bordo vi è anche il perfido e spietato dottor Soran, uno scienziato alieno, il quale in altri tempi ha perduto moglie e figli sul suo pianeta (distrutto) e che ora aspira a trasferirsi su "Nexus", paradiso di benessere e felicità tra le galassie. Fra le astronavi in navigazione vi è anche quella di due sorelle aliene - Klingon esse pure (Lursa e B'Etor) - che ad un certo momento accettano a boro Soran. Tutti hanno uno stupefacente denominatore comune: la dimensione temporale non esiste ed essi vanno e vengono nei secoli, vivendo quella del momento; ma anche retrocedendo in quella già vissuta. Per Picard il problema urgente è quello di controllare il dottore e, comunque, evitare una "stringa di energia", una minaccia permanente che turba gli spazi galattici come una improvvisa marea, tanto più che, avvelenandosi della occasione Soran ha deciso di far esplodere una stella del "Sistema Meridiano". Mentre l'"Enterprise" plana per un gravissimo guasto su di un astro, Picard si ritrova a terra con quella che dovrebbe essere la sua famiglia e ritrova lo scomparso comandante Kirk nella sua casa di campagna, dove un tempo viveva la moglie ed il superstite è ora soltanto il fido cane-lupo. Ambedue credono di essere su "Nexus", dove tutto dovrebbe essere sinonimo di pace. Ma qui c'è Soran: questi si è costruito in una zona montagnosa e rocciosa un suo missile personale e vuole eliminare tutti. Nella lotta con questi Kirk muore mentre Picard riesce a far esplodere l'ordigno e con esso lo scienziato. L'"Enterprise" è ormai da considerarsi irrecuperabile. Ma il suo mito non può, ne deve, morire: grazie ai prodigiosi progressi della tecnologia, una nuova astronave battente quel nome viaggia sempre fra le galassie, per mantenere stretti i rapporti esistenti tra i cittadini della Federazione interplanetaria.
