Praxis, luna del pianeta Klingon, esplode proiettando un'onda neutronica che distrugge le riserve d'ozono del pianeta: agli abitanti alieni restano 50 anni di sopravvivenza e Gorkon, Gran Cancelliere dei Klingon, decide di trattare la pace con la Federazione dopo 25 anni di scontri. Il capitano dell'incrociatore della Federazione "Enterprise", James Tiberius Kirk, viene incaricato di scortarlo col seguito sulla Terra. Contattata la nave aliena, viene invitata la delegazione a cena sulla sua astronave, ma da quest'ultima appena rientrati Gorkon ed i suoi, partono inspiegabilmente due colpi che paralizzano il sistema antigravità dell'astronave del Klingon, consentendo a due misteriosi sicari, con speciali calzature, di penetrarvi, ferendo gravemente Gorkon ed uccidendo alcuni suoi gregari. Immediatamente Kirk e il dottor Leonard McCoy si precipitano per dare una mano, ma il medico nulla può fare per salvare Gorkon, ed i due vengono arrestati. Nel successivo processo, Kirk e McCoy vengono condannati al lavori forzati a vita sull'asteroide Rura Penthe, luogo dal clima polare. Qui una certa Martia, un essere che può assumere diverse forme, aiuta Kirk e McCoy a fuggire, ma il suo aiuto è una trappola per far catturare Kirk ed eliminarlo definitivamente. Ma l'Enterprise recupera in extremis capitano e medico, mentre a bordo si cercano gli stivali antigravità che i sicari vi devono aver nascosto. Il vulcaniano Spock, dopo aver collaborato a questa missione, sospetta la vulcaniana Valeris, il nuovo ufficiale navigatore, e sottoponendola ad una personalissima macchina della verità scopre i congiurati. Il nome del raduno della federazione lo indica invece il capitano Hikaru Sulu, ex navigatore dell'Enterprise ora al comando di un'altra astronave, che dovrebbe costringere l'Enterprise al rientro. Ma Sulu non obbedisce all'ordine, ed anzi rivela a Kirk il luogo della Conferenza di pace, che si tiene a Camp Khitomer dove i congiurati pianificano di assassinare il Presidente della Federazione, per dare un colpo mortale alle residue speranze di pace. Sarà proprio Kirk a salvarlo e dopo l'arresto dei congiurati egli e la figlia di Gorkon si riconciliano pronunciando parole di speranza che suscitano l'applauso dei presenti.
