Nel 23º secolo, per risolvere difficili problemi di energia e di ecologia del proprio Pianeta (e anche per riportare ad una normale condizione il capitano Spock) l'ammiraglio James T. Kirk ha assoluta necessità di catturare due balene, una specie ormai estinta. Inizia così un viaggio a ritroso nel tempo e nello spazio, che porta l'equipaggio dell'astronave ad atterrare indietro di 300 anni, nella California del 1986. L'obiettivo è l'acquario Sausalito ma, nel mettere in pratica il loro piano, Kirk e compagni si trovano contro Gillian Taylor, la scienziata incaricata della custodia degli animali. Dapprima incredula sulla missione da svolgere e sull'identità delle persone che si trova di fronte, Gillian si oppone in tutti i modi alla cattura dei mammiferi. A poco a poco, resasi conto che anche dall'acquario le balene saranno mandate via, si convince della necessità di agevolare l'azione di Kirk. Anzi al momento di ripartire, sale con l'equipaggio sull'astronave per andare a vivere una nuova vita con le sue balene nel 23º secolo.
