Spock è davvero morto? Preoccupato per la salute del dottor McCoy, tormentato da alienanti visioni, Kirk riceve l'inattesa visita dell'ambasciatore Sarek, padre di Spock, il quale gli rivela come il figlio, in punto di morte, abbia trasmesso nella mente del dottore il suo spirito vitale. Bones deve esserne liberato prima di impazzire, e Spock deve tornare nel suo corpo, che è stato rigenerato dall'effetto Genesis come tutto il pianeta sul quale è stato sepolto. Senza un attimo di esitazione Kirk decolla verso il nuovo mondo appena creato, incurante del fatto che la Federazione lo ha interdetto a tutti. E per farlo è costretto a "rubare" la sua nave, con l'aiuto incondizionato della sua ciurma, che si schiera fedele e compatta al suo fianco. I Klingon intanto hanno scoperto l'esistenza di Genesis, ed un loro sparviero, comandato dal feroce Kruge, è già sul posto deciso a carpire il segreto di quella tecnologia. Dopo una lotta cruenta Spock viene restituito all'affetto dei compagni, ma Kirk paga un prezzo altissimo per salvare l'amico vulcaniano.
