New York, fine anni Settanta. Il giovane Tony Manero è un ottimo ragazzo, lavora in un colorificio, fa il suo dovere e vive in famiglia. Ha i normali piccoli contrasti coi genitori, ma non ha particolari grilli per la testa. Poi c'è il sabato sera. Ecco, Tony è il re delle discoteche. Una volta sulla pedana da ballo si trasforma. È affascinante e trascinatore, l'idolo di tutti, ragazzi e ragazze. Ma il sabato non vuol dire solo discoteca, vuol dire bere, correre in macchina, far l'amore. Vuol dire eccessi. Un suo amico, scherzando, cade accidentalmente dal ponte di Brooklyn, e muore. Tony, nel frattempo, ha vinto una gara di ballo e si è innamorato della sua compagna, che però non lo ricambia: è troppo matura per lui.
