Per cinque giorni, nel 1996, David Lipsky, romanziere e giornalista, ha seguito David Foster Wallace nel tour promozionale di "Infinite Jest", con l'obiettivo di intervistarlo per la rivista Rolling Stone. I due hanno condiviso la solitudine innevata della casa di Wallace, la saliva dei suoi cani, i viaggi in auto e in aereo, l'ansia prima dei reading, l'incontro con due amiche, le sedute davanti al piccolo schermo, vera grande dipendenza di David Wallace. Si sono studiati a vicenda, si sono fatti delle confessioni e ne hanno taciute molte altre, si sono invidiati e detestati, persi e incontrati, e da allora non si sono mai più rivisti.
