Otto anni dopo la morte di Harvey Dent, Gotham è una città apparentemente pulita, ad eccezione della coscienza del commissario Gordon. Bruce Wayne vive ritirato, incapace di trovare un senso dopo la scomparsa di Rachel e il pensionamento di Batman. Glielo offre Bane, mercenario reso mostruoso da una maschera antidolorifica, che prima riduce la Wayne Enterprises in bancarotta e poi le soffia il segretissimo reattore nucleare convertendo il nucleo, pensato per produrre energia pulita, in un inarrestabile ordigno atomico. Mentre Bruce è rinchiuso in una prigione impossibile, con la schiena spezzata, Bane instaura a Gotham City una tirannia del proletariato che è un vero e proprio regime del terrore e affida il detonatore della bomba nelle mani di un cittadino misterioso.
