Il regista teatrale Benny Dodd vorrebbe affidare la parte da protagonista in una nuova commedia a Frank Elgin ma il produttore si oppone. Frank Elgin è stato infatti un attore famoso, ma ora sembra si sia dato al bere. Bermy però non rinuncia al suo proposito: egli chiama Elgin per un'audizione, che ha esito positivo. Recatosi a casa di Elgin fa la conoscenza della moglie dell'attore, Olga, una donna dall'aspetto risoluto, che sembra dominare il marito. Incominciano le prove della commedia: una sera Elgin fa a Benny delle confidenze sulla sua vita coniugale. Dopo la perdita del loro bambino la moglie aveva tentato di uccidersi e poi s'era data al bere. Lui stesso aveva incominciato a bere; ma la moglie aveva smesso ed aveva preso a dominarlo. Benny incomincia a credere che Olga eserciti una influenza sfavorevole sul marito. Dopo il mediocre successo della prima rappresentazione a Boston, Benny impone ad Olga di allontanarsi dal marito. Ma la sera Elgin s'ubriaca e viene portato ad un posto di polizia. Quando Olga e Benny vanno a riprenderlo, ha luogo una spiegazione.
