Jack Dwyer lavora per una compagnia che costruisce e mantiene acquedotti, è un ingegnere e il punto più alto della sua vita è stato inventare una valvola che "stava per diventare qualcosa di molto grande". Le difficoltà economiche in patria portano la sua società a trasferirlo con tutta la famiglia (assieme alla moglie ci sono anche due bambine piccole) in Thailandia per lavorare all'appalto che hanno in loco. Appena arrivati però scoppia una rivoluzione, un gruppo armato, spietato e sanguinolento uccide il primo ministro tailandese e scatena una guerra senza scampo per le strade e nei palazzi. Ci vorrà poco per capire che il bersaglio prediletto di tutta questa violenza, oltre al governo, sono gli occidentali e in particolare proprio gli americani come Jack, quelli venuti per lavorare all'acquedotto. Senza nessuna conoscenza militare, nessuna spiccata capacità da uomo d'azione Jack dovrà cercare di mantenere in vita la propria famiglia.
