Il protagonista, Vic Mackey, capo della squadra di assalto è un detective che ottiene quasi sempre ciò che vuole; votato in un certo senso alla giustizia, ma dai modi violenti, bugiardo, corrotto ed incline alle azioni criminali. Una sua scelta è di venire spesso a patti con la malavita, talvolta non per scopi criminali, ma per trovare un equilibrio di potere ed evitare inutili spargimenti di sangue nelle strade del quartiere; altre volte, invece, lo fa proprio per guadagno personale (anche se principalmente destina il "bottino" ai tre figli, di cui due autistici e che richiedono scuole e cure costose). Questo comportamento ambiguo gli procura incessanti attriti con i colleghi e soprattutto con i superiori. Per colpa delle loro azioni, le vite dei quattro membri della squadra di assalto finiscono per scontrarsi con un destino sempre più duro.
