Trama
Dopo la morte del padre in Messico, Stéphane, un giovane creativo che confonde realtà e sogno, torna a Parigi su richiesta della madre. Ad attenderlo ci sono un impiego da illustratore in una piccola impresa di calendari promozionali e una bella vicina di casa, Stéphanie, che cuce per hobby giocattoli di pezza. Invaghitosi della fanciulla, Stéphane la corteggia in sogno e da sveglio costruisce per lei pupazzi meccanici o improbabili macchine del tempo. Ma in amore, sogno e realtà non coincidono quasi mai.
Reduce dall'incredibile successo di "Se mi lasci ti cancello", il regista firma e gira il suo film più personale e delicato recuperando l'elemento onirico e lasciandolo libero di sconfinare nella realtà, interrotta da una scenografia artigianale e incantevole, erede dell'animazione praghese. Pupazzi meccanici, macchine del tempo che conducono a un passato lontano soltanto due secondi, trasmettitori del pensiero, sono stupefacenti marchingegni gondryani che interagiscono con gli attori creando l'illusione di un sogno di cellophane.
