Finalmente un prodotto cinematografico specificamente pensato per il pubblico giovane che offre ai ragazzi una confezione ben concepita, profondità introspettiva ma soprattutto spunti di riflessione. Che Hunger Games sarebbe stato lontano anni luce dalla saga di Twilight lo si poteva capire già dalla scelta del regista, quel Gary Ross che con Pleasantville e Seabiscuit aveva dimostrato di essere un cineasta in grado di padroneggiare lo spettacolo adatto al grande pubblico senza però renderlo piatto, anzi condendolo con delle sottotrame sempre capaci di rivelare il lato inquietante della facciata conciliatoria americana. In questo suo ritorno al cinema dopo nove anni di assenza fin dalle primissime inquadrature Ross sembra voler prendere esplicitamente le distanze dalla messa in scena patinata e monotona che ci si poteva aspettare visto il target di destinazione del film. Invece Hunger Games parte come un film nervoso, pieno di inquadrature "sporche", di macchina a mano assemblata con un montaggio estremamente serrato. Questa scelta estetica ben precisa all'inizio si rivela addirittura eccessivamente ostentata, in quanto non permette bene di mettere a fuoco ambienti, situazioni ed anche i personaggi, fattore che per un film di fantascienza è piuttosto importante.
