Due cowboy sfregiano una prostituta. Le sue colleghe mettono insieme mille dollari di taglia per vendicarla. Così si mettono in azione i pistoleri per guadagnarsi la somma. I personaggi sono Clint Eastwood, ex killer che adesso fa il contadino, vedovo con due bambini; Richard Harris, un ammazzasette inglese tutto fumo e niente arrosto; Morgan Freeman, amico di Eastwood dai tempi d'oro delle rapine. E c'è lo sceriffo Gene Hackman, che ha una sua personalissima idea della giustizia: tratta bene i cattivi e male i "buoni". Tutta gente sui sessant'anni. C'è anche un giovane killer scattante, ma non ci vede a più di cinquanta metri. I due cowboy vengono scovati e uccisi. Alla fine Clint fa strage di sceriffo e suoi vice, per vendicare il suo amico massacrato a botte.
