Trama
Il ricco possidente Pollitt domina patriarcalmente la famiglia, composta dalla sua remissiva e devota moglie, e dai due figli, Brick, sposato a Margaret, che ama appassionatamente il marito, e Cooper, che ha in moglie la gretta Mae. In seguito ad un malinteso Brick si è allontanato dalla moglie, che trascura del tutto, e si è dato al bere. Brick, già appassionato giocatore di calcio, aveva un amico carissimo e compagno di gioco, tale Skipper, al quale sembrava fosse dedicato tutto il suo affetto. Margaret, gelosa di questa straordinaria amicizia, aveva denunciato al marito il contegno di Skipper, che la corteggiava in modo del tutto incompatibile coi propri doveri di lealtà verso l'amico. Questa denuncia aveva provocato un violento conflitto tra Brick e Skipper, il quale, scosso dalla furibonda rampogna dell'amico, si era ucciso. La notizia che i giorni di papà Pollitt, minato da un male inesorabile, sono contati, viene a rendere già acuta l'intima crisi in cui si dibatte la famiglia per la bassa avidità di Cooper e di Mae, preoccupati soltanto di assicurarsi tutta l'eredità del vecchio e per il dissidio esistente tra Brick e Margaret.
