Trama:
Pilotata dal capitano Dan Holland e dal primo ufficiale Charles Pizer, l'astronave statunitense 'Palomino' è giunta quasi al termine di una infruttuosa ricerca di nuove forme di vita in una zona inesplorata dello spazio. Mentre stanchi e sfiduciati i cosmonauti pensano alla propria casa, si trovano improvvisamente nei pressi di un buco nero accanto al quale scoprono il 'Cygnus', una enorme stazione americana della quale si erano perse le tracce circa venti anni prima.
