Il lungometraggio, sentimentale e dai toni intensi, si suddivide in tre episodi incentrati su tre momenti diversi della vita dei due personaggi principali. In generale viene quindi affrontata la loro storia di amicizia e l'evolversi di questa in un sentimento più forte che non viene sconfitto neanche dalla lontananza che separa i due personaggi fino all'età adulta.
Il titolo 5 centimetri al secondo, come si evince da uno dei dialoghi del lungometraggio, si riferisce alla velocità con cui i petali di ciliegio cadono al suolo. Anche questo film analizza il tema privilegiato di Makoto Shinkai: la distanza, spaziale e temporale, che separa le persone.
The story is set in Japan, beginning in the 1990s up until the present day (2008[a]), with each act centered on a boy named Takaki T?no. The first act takes place during a time when cell phones are uncommon and email had not yet reached the general population.
