Quando il milionario James (Will Ferrell), manager di una società di fondi comuni di investimento, viene inchiodato per frode e condannato a scontare una pena nella prigione di San Quentin, ottiene dal giudice 30 giorni per mettere in ordine i suoi affari. Disperato, l'uomo chiede a Darnell (Kevin Hart) di aiutarlo per evitare una vita dietro le sbarre, ma cosa ne può sapere della prigione Darnell - un piccolo affarista che lavora sodo e non ha mai ricevuto neanche una multa per divieto di sosta? Insieme, i due uomini faranno quel che occorre perché James diventi un "duro"e man mano scopriranno quanto entrambi si sbagliassero su tante cose - compresa l'idea che avevano l'uno dell'altro.
