Trama
Charles Tatum è un giornalista di talento ma la sua quasi totale mancanza di scrupoli gli fa perdere il lavoro. Costretto a ripiegare su un piccolo giornale di provincia, Charles aspetta nell'ombra di cogliere lo scoop sensazionale che gli permetta di risalire l'onda. Un giorno, mentre sta facendo un servizio sulla caccia dei cobra, viene a sapere che Leo, il figlio del proprietario di una stazione di servizio, è rimasto intrappolato in una cava di sabbia a causa di una frana. Tatum si accorda perché la squadra di soccorso trovi il ragazzo il più tardi possibile, con lo sceriffo, un uomo senza scrupoli, e con la moglie di Leo, Lorraine, una donna molto bella che odia in maniera assoluta e viscerale suo marito. Mentre sul luogo accorrono curiosi e giornalisti, Tatum pensa di poter trarre i maggiori benefici dall'incidente, ma non ha calcolato la salute di Leo. Non serve a nulla affrettare le ricerche, il ragazzo sta per perdere la vita...
Emozionante e profetico, uno dei capolavori di Wilder.
