Trama
1916, sul fronte tedesco. Due ufficiali francesi, il capitano di stato maggiore de Boieldieu e il tenente d’aviazione Maréchal si ritrovano prigionieri nello stesso "oflag" in compagnia di un insegnante, di un ingegnere del catasto, di un attore e dell’ebreo Rosenthal. Le differenze di classe vengono dimenticate e la vita si organizza in modo non del tutto sgradevole, grazie alla tolleranza dei carcerieri. Ma tutti continuano a sognare la libertà.
Un capolavoro di J. Renoir, e dell’umanesimo al cinema. La verità dei fatti, dei personaggi, dell’atmosfera si fa poesia in un accorato messaggio pacifista più che antimilitarista che non trascura le differenze sociali. Scritto da Renoir con Charles Spaak, possiede una generosa ricchezza ideologica che nasce dalla sua ambiguità.
