Nelly Kim Furtado (Victoria, 2 dicembre 197 è una cantante e attrice canadese di origini portoghesi.
La sua musica è influenzata dall'amore per R&B, il fado portoghese e per le sonorità giamaicane e brasiliane. Influenze le arrivano anche dall'ascolto di artisti come Jeff Buckley, Caetano Veloso, Radiohead, Amalia Rodrigues e molti altri.
Il suo primo album, del 2001, è Whoa, Nelly! che, anticipato dal singolo I'm Like a Bird, vende 6,5 milioni di copie in tutto il mondo, diventando anche disco di platino negli USA.
Nel 2003 pubblica il secondo album Folklore, da cui estrae cinque singoli: Powerless, Try, Explode, Força, inno del campionato europeo di calcio 2004 tenutosi in Portogallo, e The Grass Is Green.
Nel giugno del 2006 torna con l'album Loose, che raggiunge la vetta delle classifiche americane contemporaneamente al singolo apripista Promiscuous, cantato in coppia con il produttore Timbaland. In Europa esce come primo singolo Maneater che raggiunge la vetta della classifica inglese. Questo album segna una decisa apertura di Nelly alle sonorità pop e R&B.
Nella serata del 1º marzo 2007 partecipa alla serata dedicata agli ospiti del Festival di Sanremo insieme agli Zero Assoluto, con cui canta Appena prima di partire.
Fra la fine di dicembre 2008 e l'inizio di gennaio 2009 esce una collaborazione di Nelly Furtado con James Morrison, "Broken Strings", mentre il quarto album della cantante, che sarà intitolato "Mi Plan", è stato pubblicato l'11 settembre 2009.
Tra maggio e giugno ha collaborato col rapper N.E.R.D in Hot-N-Fun La cantante è tornata nei negozi di dischi il 16 novembre sempre del 2010, con la pubblicazione della sua prima raccolta, The Best of Nelly Furtado, pubblicata dall'etichetta discografica Geffen Records.
