Donna Summer, nome d'arte di LaDonna Adrian Gaines (Boston, 31 dicembre 1948 – Naples, 17 maggio 2012), è stata una cantante statunitense.
La sua notorietà è dovuta principalmente a una serie di successi discografici - ottenuti soprattutto negli anni settanta - che le valsero il titolo di "Queen of Disco" ("Regina della disco music" . Con oltre 150 milioni di dischi venduti nel corso della sua ultra quarantennale carriera, la Summer è entrata nel novero degli artisti che hanno raggiunto il maggior numero di vendite nella storia della musica. Donna Summer rappresenta una rarità nel panorama della disco music degli anni Settanta. Sebbene sia stata una delle artiste più note di quel periodo, il suo repertorio non si esauriva nella disco music, ma includeva pezzi R&B, rock e gospel. Donna Summer ha vinto premi tra i più prestigiosi, tra cui: 6 American Music Awards, 5 Grammy Awards, un Golden Globe ed un Premio Oscar. Inoltre nel 1994 è stata premiata con una stella da parte della Hollywood Walk Of Fame.
LaDonna Gaines nasce il 31 dicembre 1948 a Boston. Incomincia a cantare con qualche rock band prima di trasferirsi in Germania, dove nel 1968 lavora nelle versioni tedesche dei musical “Hair”, “Godspell” e “Porgy & Bess”. In Germania incontra l’attore Helmut Sommer, dal quale prende il cognome, poi mutato in Summer. A Monaco incontra Giorgio Moroder e Pete Bellotte, produttori/compositori al lavoro nella etichetta Oasis. Nel 1975, dopo un paio di singoli piuttosto fortunati in Francia, Olanda e Belgio, il trio azzecca “Love to love you baby”, uno dei brani con cui la disco-music entra nella fase più importante. Il brano vende un milione di copie solo negli Usa, dove è pubblicato dalla Casablanca Records. Nel 1977, altrettanta fortuna arride a “I feel love”. Donna Summer diventa la diva incontestata della discomusic, tanto da alimentare attorno a lei svariate leggende.
Il triennio 1977-79 è il più intenso: ottiene altri quattro numeri uno americani (“MacArthur Park”, “Hot stuff”, “Bad girls”, “No more tears (Enough is enough)”, in duetto con Barbra Streisand). Debutta al cinema interpretando “Thank God is friday”, grazie al quale vince un Oscar per la canzone “Last dance”. Nel 1980 è la prima artista a firmare per la nascente Geffen Records, ma non è la sola svolta: si proclama “born again Christian”, e gradualmente abbandona la disco-music. Nel 1980 il suo ultimo successo, comunque inferiore ai precedenti, è “The wanderer”; dal 1982 per “Love is in control” passa dalle mani di Moroder e Bellotte a quelle di Quincy Jones. Dopo una lunga pausa di riflessione, ritorna nel 1987 con un tour e la hit “Dinner with Gerhswin”.
Sul finire degli anni Novanta si riunisce con Moroder per il singolo “Carry on”, con il quale vince il Grammy come miglior realizzazione dance. Successivamente firma con la Sony con la quale realizza l’album dal vivo VH1 PRESENTS: LIVE AND MORE ENCORE! che contiene i suoi maggiori successi.
Nel 2008 esce il suo ultimo lavoro in studio dopo quasi nove anni, CRAYONS. Continua negli anni seguenti a dedicarsi alle esibizioni dal vivo, ma, dopo una battaglia contro un tumore, muore in Florida nel maggio 2012 a 63 anni.
